5 Manga Reviews and Recommendation; Beelzebub, Zetman, etc…

Hey, this post is just me recommending 5 good series.

Beelzebub

Summary: Strong delinquent Oga (nicknamed Ogre, Demon, or “it’d be alright if he’d just die” by other delinquents) picks up a baby that turns out to be the son of the Great Demon King! Chosen to raise the baby until he’s in age of destroying mankind, together with the demon maid Hilda, they’re sure to make mankind die… of laughter!

Considering the manga is getting an OVA this season and an anime series in January, I thought it was a good idea to start with this series.

How could I describe this Shounen manga? Really random, funny and badass. It has a good arc. This is the kind of manga where the main character is a master of over-kill and leaves a nice pile of corpses. For someone like me who loves anime or manga with a badass main character and who hates wimpy characters like Kurosaki Ichigo or Shinji, it’s freaking awesome.

Tamura Ryuhei makes this series look amazingly absurb so well that it brings out its own mark-out moments. Long Live The NWO and by that I don’t mean the New World Order. I mean the New World Oga!!!! I give this manga a strong 8/10.

Threads of Time

Summary: High school student Moon Bin Kim has difficulty sleeping due to a recurring nightmare where he’s stranded over a thousand years in the past chasing a dark-haired girl into a deep abyss.
Before long, the nightmare overwhelms him, and he is unable to tell whether he is Moon Bin, a Seoul teenager at the end of the second Millennium, or Sa Kyung Kim, the son of a prominent warrior family in the middle of the first Millennium. People in his present-day life assume roles in his historical life as he struggles to learn exactly who he is and what he’s expected to do, straddling a transmigratory portal through time and space.
In the present, his school’s kendo club battles to stay in the championships but in the past, Moon Bin finds himself at the threshold of a territorial dispute on the plains of Mongolia.

Hopefully I didn’t lose you on the summary plot. Now we pass on a serious seinen manhwa. definitely it’s not something that every casual manga fans will read, but I couldn’t resist putting that up because this is one of my favorites manhwa. I liked the art but the story itself was brilliant. The story really goes to the main point and doesn’t wander off pointlessly like other series. The protagonist and antagonist are very well-developed throughout the entirety of the manhwa. I give this a 8.5/10.

Record of a Fallen Vampire

Summary: There is a legend that tells of how the world was almost destroyed thousands of years ago by the vampire queen after she unleashed her latent powers. Despite their efforts, the humans were unable to defeat her, and thus resorted to sealing her away until the time came that they would be powerful enough to destroy the seal and kill her. However, the humans are not the only ones after the seal. Having cast aside his kingdom and betraying his own race and the dhampirs (half-vampires), the vampire king is persistently searching, even to this day, for where his queen has been sealed away so he may break the seal and free her before the humans do. Fearing that once the king and queen are reunited, they shall continue to destroy the world together, the humans and dhampirs hunt the king, using any method possible.

This is an example of using an overused theme that is “vampires” but with a different attempt. This is not a Hellsing kind of manga nor is it a shoujo type like Vampire Knight. It is simply a well thought story with great twists during the events of the manga. The art seems very old-school; there’s a little bit of a shoujo manga art feel. Record of Fallen Vampire has some fight segments but it isn’t totally the main focus. By the way, The characters looks cute. I thought it was a pretty good tragedy for I love other people’s misery. Rating: 7/10.

Zetman

Summary: It follows the life of a homeless boy living with his “grandpa”. The story starts to kick off when they encounter a man trying to commit suicide mumbling something along the lines of “before it is too late”. Of course from then on the action begins and the dark plot begins to unfold with each volume.

I have to warn you; this is a very mature seinen mature containing 2 or 3 rape scenes. Aside those sex scenes, I believe Zetman is an excellent series. The tone is really dark, yet the manga contains some funny awkward elements. You get the feeling that a happy ending isn’t evident, but maybe not impossible. If you’ve read I’s from the same mangaka, you’d probably have guess right that the pace is slow but that’s how good storyline should be done: Not rushing the storyline and not making your readers lose interest. Action fights are used right and aren’t over-used. Rating: 8/10

Angel Densetsu

Summary: The story is of Kitano Seiichirou, a very kind and pure-hearted young man, with a horrifying, monstrous face. People being what they are, they think he’s a terrifying delinquent, and there are plenty of chance misunderstandings (coupled with Kitano’s convenient inability to understand what’s happening around him) that propel him into the position of “school guardian”, a.k.a. head thug on campus.

If you want to know where in the blue hell Yagi Norihiro came up with the forms and faces of the youmas in Claymore, Kitano Seiichirou is their prototype. On the picture of the bloody face of Kitano, this isn’t the face of a demon, this is his face when he’s suffering lol. It’s quite fun and refreshing to come out of the 2000s manga comedy and go back to the 1990s. You’ll probably laugh your arse off your chair when you read this. The story really explore how people judges for the looks but not for what they are. Kitano throughout the story will be able to sort out the misunderstanding little-by-little that he’s not a bad guy but his clumsiness remains a powerful destructive weapon. Rating: 8/10
